The offline RPGs we didn't want to put down

June 27, 2026 · Marek Dvořák

Offline RPGs used to mean stripped-down experiences. That's no longer true. The genre on phones has quietly grown up, and some of these stories rival what I'd expect from a handheld console.

Emberfall Chronicles leads our list because of its combat. The grid positioning forces you to think about your party as a team, not a pile of stats, and the slow-burn story kept me invested through a long flight. I finished it in a hotel with the Wi-Fi password written on a card I never used.

If you want something lighter, look for RPGs with shorter chapters you can play in bursts. The trick is checking whether the save system is local. A surprising number of 'offline' RPGs still phone home for cloud saves, which defeats the point on a plane.

My one tip: turn off auto-battle for the first few hours of any new RPG. You learn the systems faster, and the fights that matter later hit harder when you actually understand them.
